How do you receive forgiveness for the wrong that you have done?

Is it by "trying to be a good person?"

NO!  Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace are you saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." You receive forgiveness by humbling yourself before God and calling upon Jesus to forgive you. If you would like to receive the free gift of eternal life in heaven, please pray this prayer and believe!

"God, as much as I try to be a good person, when I compare myself to You, in your perfect holiness and righteousness, I recognize that I am imperfect. I am a sinner. I cannot be good enough in my own power and strength to earn my way to heaven. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary, that He lived a sinless life; that He died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins; and that He rose from the dead. By faith, I repent of my sin and choose to trust Jesus as my Lord and Savior."

If you just prayed and trusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you have been "born again" as Jesus said you must be in the Book of John. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the World, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
